When hay is harvested and put in bundles or bails, it can be hard to remove it from the stack once settled. The invention of hay knives was created to assist farmers in cutting the hay into small sections to feed the cows. The first hay knife of this style was patented in 1871. It is commonly referred to as the “Lightning Hay Knife” because of its appearance.
